Thirty-two years ago—yes, 3-2 years ago—I fell in love with the written word. I had always been a reader, I read everything and anything I could get my hands on from the back of cereal boxes to Dr. Seuss books.
When I was 17 years old though that changed from love to obsession. I picked up a copy of a book by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss from my mother’s bookshelf. The book was tattered and torn, the cover was held on by aging Scotch tape and even with that repair, the book looked as though it could fall apart at any moment.
My mother told me I could “borrow” the book but I should be very careful with it. Careful? I wondered in confusion, how could I be careful with a book that already looked as though it had survived fire, flood and a swarm of locusts? What was so special about this book?
I would soon find out. This book held magic. This book held words that were hypnotizing in their rhythm and imagery. This book would take you to places far away that you would never visit in real life. This book, simply put, was life-changing.
I knew at that moment, in that very instant, that I wanted to be a writer. Not just any writer, but I wanted to write romance novels or song lyrics. Now, if you’re one of those who sniff their nose and turns it up at the idea of indulging in something as frivolous as a romance novel or a song lyric, then you probably think that’s not such a lofty goal to set for yourself. If you are like me, you know that writing is a labor of love, it is an addiction, a craving, and a master that cannot be satisfied easily.
So, for 32 years I have held this dream close to my heart. I have gotten close a few times before my son was born I had completed three manuscripts and began the process of submitting them to the publishing houses of that time.
The rejection letters came pouring in, discouraging in their form letter styles. Soon I was working from home full time with a preschooler and an infant. I didn’t have the time, or the energy to read a book (or the back of a cereal box) let alone to write one.
Then I started blogging here where I met all of you amazing readers and rediscovered my love of storytelling. Being published twice in anthologies, The Mother of All Meltdowns and Clash of the Couples awoke the dream of seeing my name on the cover of a book. Creating an Amazon author profile made me realize the dream was within reach if I only put forth the effort. Read here what mistakes to avoid!
So I did. I set a new goal, not to publish a book but to start and finish a story or to write some song lyrics. To prove to myself that I could do it. That I could create a story, a set of characters, and start at the beginning and not give up until I had written those magic words…The End.
This year a dream comes true, within the next few weeks I will be sharing with you the release of my first novel. Hiding in Plain Sight will be published with Evernight Publishing under a pen name, Angela Evans. It is a romantic suspense novel filled with characters I hope you love, suspense, a bad guy who will keep you up at night, and more than a few scenes that will steam up your windows on these cold winter nights.
Stay tuned for exciting events like the cover reveal, the release of the book and maybe…if you’re lucky…some heart-stopping sneak peeks that will leave you craving more!
